Daily Bread

Two things I ask of you, Lord; do not refuse me before I die:
Keep falsehood and lies far from me,
give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.
Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, 'Who is the Lord?'
Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.
Proverbs 30:7-9

I think about this verse a lot.

Just enough. . . I do not want what everyone in Orange County has. Their bling blinds them.

@Annabelle- Sadly, all around me I see that the prayers of many Christians are far from this. And sadly I often fail to appreciate that God has answered it in my life :)

I love this verse - it's the theme for one of my blogs (I have a bit of a blogging problem)
www.jill-foleyjourney.blogspot.com

This is also the next verse I have slated for memory work!

@Jill- I had no idea you had so many blogs...now I have some new reading material :)

I love simplicity, it really is a beautiful thing. I started reading Hope Lives yesterday, and this verse was in one of the chapters I went through, and then today it has come up in two different places. I love when God gives verses/reminders like that :)

(P.s...I am trying to go through Hope Lives slowly so I can really absorb everything, but I am loving it...I just want to keep going. Thank you so much for the recommendation!)

@Jill- Sure, I would love to get to know the family behind Compassion Family :)

@Annabelle- I have almost caught up with you, and I started yesterday :) I decided to read two chapters a day, including the journaling- one chapter in the morning and on at night. It reminds me of Radical in some ways, and so far I am really enjoying it! We could read it together via the internet. Wouldn't that be sweet? ;)

LETS DO IT!!! lol. I've never heard of Radical

Love love love this.
I don't think I have ever read that verse or maybe I have and I just didn't really read it!

Thank you for posting this! :-)

@Annabelle- Radical should definitely be on your reading list!

@Jess- Sometimes verses I've ready many times will jump out at me like they are brand new and take on so much more meaning...I am sure this is the Holy Spirit! This is one of those verses that I know I've read, but jumped out at me yesterday (not to mention I came across it in 3 different places...)

can you tell me about it? I gotta finish hope live and I'm reading Through gates of splendor then a chance to die, and then I need more reading!

@Annabelle- The main premise of Radical is that we have strayed from the what faith should look like (as exampled for us in the Bible), and that as wealthy Christians we have somehow replaced it with the American dream...

It is about taking radical steps of faith and to go against what our culture says and to serve Christ the way He desires.

Before reading this book I always felt that our church was being led astray by the American dream, and then reading this just confirmed it, and gave Biblical perspective...and also really motivated me to do more for the Kingdom.

It is really excellent, and the author, David Platt, also has sermons online (if you look for "The Church at Brook Hills" on itunes...they are free)...I actually started listening to his sermons before his book came out, he really is an excellent teacher.

I need to find more of my Elisabeth Elliot books and read those too. I love reading her stuff.

Have you heard Shaun Groves' new song "Enough" based on this verse?

Shebecomes said...

@Jill- No, I haven't. The other day when you posted his new album I had every intention of listening to it, and I guess I got sidetracked. I will go listen now, and make sure I listen to enough first :)
