About a month ago I was asked to review Annie Downs' recent book, Perfectly Unique. I have read many books in my life about self-esteem and self-respect, and honestly, they all said the same thing in a slightly different way. But what drew me to reading this book was that Annie's view of this issue is completely unique.
With a balanced sense of humor and open honesty Annie talks about individual parts of the body, literally from our head to our feet, and how each part has been created to worship and serve our creator.
I love that Annie doesn't just make a list of "don'ts" in regards to how we treat and what we do with our bodies. Instead she covers the physical and spiritual purpose of each part and shares what we should do.
One of my favorite parts of this book is the chapter on the eyes. In this chapter Annie has a section titled, "What do you choose to see?" Instead of just telling us not to watch dirty movies or inappropriate television shows, Annie reminds us to open our eyes and really see what is around us. Are there situations where God wants to use you? Are there people you are overlooking? "If we want to honor God with our eyes, we have to choose to see the hurt, the needs, the pain, and the bad that are in our world."
This book was written to speak to the hearts of teen girls and young women. If you are in a place in your life that you are learning to love the body God created for you, if you want some insight on how to use your body to better worship and serve our creator, or if you are the parent or small group leader of young women, I would recommend for you to check out this book. It will encourage you to celebrate the you that God created, as His perfectly unique masterpiece.
Oh, and if you would like to meet Annie and get to know her fun and inspiring style, check out her blog at Annie Blogs. She would love for you to stop by!
