Until Then

This holiday season has been one of mourning and celebration for my family. Two weeks before Christmas my grandpa was placed in hospice, and on December 27th he went to be with the Lord. He had such a great impact on so many lives, I want to take a moment to share about him here.

My grandpa was a pastor who lived his life as a servant leader. He grew up a country boy, and met my grandma while following the wheat harvest. He showed up at the wrong house one day, and found my grandmother sitting on the porch reading her Bible. They were married for over 67 years.

My grandpa was the kind of pastor who truly reflected Jesus. He was relational, an amazing listener, gentle, and the most patient man I have ever known. He served most of his career in small prison towns in humble churches where he would never receive earthly fame or fortune.

My grandpa, Pastor Bill Doerksen, baptizing me (1989).
We are all mourning as his absence leaves a great hole in many of our lives, especially my grandmother's. Yet we rejoice because we know he is celebrating in the presence of his savior and being reunited with so many who went before him, many who he loved and many who he personally introduced to Jesus.

Before he died he had glimpses of Heaven, and shared about the men dressed in white robes riding on white horses who filled his room. Even in his last days his words were filled with wisdom, and I leave you now with a few of his final words.

Today I am sad, but beyond thankful that I had the honor of calling this man Grandpa.

In honor of Pastor Bill Doerksen, a fund has been set up through Beautiful Feet Global Outreach to train pastors in Zimbabwe. If you are interested in donating to this legacy, you can do so here.
