A call for Compassion

In 149 days I will be on a plane headed to India! I know, its still a bit far away for me to be so excited, but this is something I have been looking forward to for years. This is because I am going to India for a very special reason...I am going to meet one of my Compassion children!

For those of you that don't know much about Compassion International, it is an organization committed to minister to the phyiscal, spiritual, economic, and social needs of children living in 25 of the most impoverished countries in the world. They have many programs that confront the most desperate needs of those living in extreme poverty, but they are best known for their child sponsorship. A sponsor gives $32 a month to help meet the holistic needs of one child. Compassion gives these children names and faces, and mediates child/sponsor relationships through letter writing, opportunities to give birthday, Christmas, and family gifts, and even the opportunity to meet your sponsored child.

I have two sponsored children. Lorkems is 11 and lives in Haiti, and Dilsili, who I will be meeting in February, is almost 17 and lives in India. Dilsili only has one year left in the program, and she will graduate from highschool with the education she needs to succeed, but more importantly a strong foundation set on Christ.

I ask you today to pray about sponsoring a child. One of the most common excuses for not sponsoring a child is financial reasons. But if you think about it, a life saving $32 a month for a child in need would be a simple sacrifice for many of us living in such a blessed country. Wash your own car, make coffee at home, give up one pedicure or manicure a month, cut back on buying all those shoes...whatever it is, we all have places we have room to give a little more.

Currently Compassion has 442 children waiting for sponsorship who have been waiting for six months or more. If for nothing more than curiosity, take a look at these beautiful faces and consider if God could be calling you to sponsor one of His children.

Blessing,
Rebecca
